Sun safety for preschool children
MD Anderson’s Melanoma Moon Shot prevention flagship partnered with the Pediatrics Education and Creative Arts program to create a curriculum for preschool children to teach proper sun safety.
The curriculum promotes sun protection whenever a child is outdoors. The goals are to express why sun protection is important, and for the children to demonstrate how to protect their skin from the sun. Children learn to cover up using protective clothing, hats and sunglasses, using sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, finding shade when outdoors, and understanding when shadows are short (between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.) to be super protected.
The curriculum is activity based, and includes creative arts, language and literacy skills, science, math and social studies. The curriculum is highly engaging and stresses the importance of children developing good sun protection habits now.
