Venus’ Story

When Venus Otar, a teacher, was diagnosed with uterine cancer she felt like her whole world had collapsed. She went on to autopilot and was in complete shock. She was told that she would need a hysterectomy as well as chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Though her biggest worry was telling her family the news.
As soon as she was diagnosed she went to speak to Macmillan and from then she heavily used the Macmillan Support Line, online community and website to access information.
She also struggled to pay her rising heating bills during a very cold winter. Her heating broke down and she found help from Macmillan. She also received benefits advice.
Her sister Janish (see separate case study) made sure she was supported. She was there to drive her to her treatment and do the shopping for her.
Now Venus has become one of Macmillan’s Cancer voices, sharing her knowledge with others going through a similar experience.
