Surgical Treatment of Melanoma — Sloan-Kettering
Melanoma is the fifth most common type of cancer and is more aggressive than other types of skin cancer. As skin cancer expert Daniel Coit of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center explains, however, it can usually be cured with surgery when found early. Coit also describes a procedure called sentinel lymph node mapping, in which the first lymph node that a tumor cell might spread to (called the sentinel node) is removed for biopsy. If the sentinel node does not show tumor cells, further surgery is likely unnecessary.
