Macmillan Cancer Supoort – Cathy’s Story

Sadly, Cathy died on Christmas day 2013. We’d like to thank Cathy for sharing her story, and her family for allowing us to continue to share it after her death so that other’s can benefit from Macmillan’s support.

Cathy lived in Dumfries, Scotland with her husband and daughter . She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2007.

In this short film Cathy describes her chemo as awful, and says she suffered many side effects. However, she says that she felt more lonely after finishing treatment as she didn’t have that regular contact with professionals at the hospital.

Then Cathy met Claire, her Macmillan nurse. She says Claire was a huge help, offering a listening ear when she had nowhere else to turn. Claire has since left her post as a nurse to manage the local information and support centre. Cathy used the centre regularly. In particular she enjoyed meeting other people with cancer and hearing about their experiences in drop-in sessions.
