Decoding Cancer’s DNA
https://www.cancercenter.com/ Rhonda Bey was 64 when she was diagnosed with a rare form of appendix cancer. Because no standard treatment options existed for her disease, Bey’s doctors at Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) turned to Foundation Medicine to learn more about the mutations in her cancer cells. After examining a biopsied sample from Bey’s tumor, researchers discovered mutations that indicated the cancer may be responsive to immunotherapy. Bey’s tumors shrank and eventually disappeared, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has since approved her immunotherapy drug as a first-line treatment for patients with certain tumors, regardless of the cancer’s location.
