Talking to a Specialist When Diagnosed with Melanoma
When Martha Bishop’s daughter was playing with a mole on her skin, she went in to see her doctor. She noticed that it was changing colors and began to feel uncomfortable about its nature. After her doctor dismissed the mole, her intuition set in, and she asked to have it removed. Her persistence—and maybe even her daughter’s playfulness—is the reason she is talking today. She was diagnosed with a malignant tumor days later. After trials of medication, the ICU, and many hardships, she began a clinical trial that is attributed to her title as a cancer survivor. The advice that she offers is very critical, “make sure you’re being treated by a melanoma specialist,” and “there’s hope.”
